Y has a pet Labrador with a creamy white coat whose hobbies include jumping on me and cheekily shedding on my pants. Despite this and other things, I love that dog and along with J’s black labrador (whose behaviour is as opposite as the colour of his coat) they’ve actually opened me up to owning dogs in general.
But the other day while i was driving Y home from uni I got a little reminder of just what owning a dog entails when we saw a little white with brown splotched female jack russell wandering around the streets. She was obviously exhausted and I wanted to pull over and try see if it had ID when Y told me she’d seen the exact same dog that morning. That had been 6 hours ago…
We ended up spending almost 20 minutes trying to catch the little dog, old and exhausted as she was, we didnt want to chase it. With the help of another passerby walking her own dogs we managed to put a lead on her. One collar ID check and a voicemail from the perennially understaffed neighbouring council later we took her to the vet where they sent for somebody to pick her up from our local council.
I guess you can love dogs and play with them and walk them, but at the end of the day having a pet of any kind and ensuring its survival is not something I can ever take lightly. Sad as it is, you also can’t always rely on a strangers kindness to stop and help when they see a lost pet. Maybe i’ll start with a hermit crab. Maybe i’ll just stick to Y’s smelly pooch.

I had one of those textbook father-son moments of intense discussion the other day. We spoke about, among many things, real estate, international travel and how I spend my time.
After what seemed like hours, he and I came to the conclusion that after cashing in the cheque of University, Work, Spending time with Y, Scouting, and Politics I should have a rather healthy surplus in my account. However, through numerous unreported costs, deductions or bad estimates the balance is rarely ever properly reconciled.
Some would say an audit then deep cuts is necessary but i’m a human being, not the C*alition so i don’t think i’ll start shaving hours off my sleep, foregoing showers or driving a needle into my eyeball anytime soon. To correct myself - my conversation with dad wasn’t a text-book moment but rather one straight out of a novel, you know the enjoyable ones you take your time with.
Here’s to me managing my time better but enjoying it to no less of an extent.
Uni started today, any hopes to do the above is a crock of lies and wishful thinking of no consequence, wish me luck.
God dammit this song though.
